Inspiration

Writer’s Block draws inspiration from the vibrant streets of NYC, the iconic birthplace of hip hop culture. Step into the world of mixed reality and embody the spirit of a breakdancer or graffiti artist right in your own space. Transform your surroundings into a tribute to hip hop with legendary artwork by graffiti writer Lady Pink and the soulful beats of Madlib.

What it does

Experience the art of breakdancing and graffiti through Meta’s Presence Platform. Select an avatar to mimic your dance moves and choose from a curated collection of mixtapes. Want to perfect your technique? Simply select a move from the menu and replay it in your environment. Freeze frames, scratch back and forth with a turntable to control animations—all within your reach.

How we built it

We utilized the Movement SDK to capture body poses and movements for real-time feedback while you groove to hip hop tracks by legendary producers. Study your dance poses from any angle by pausing your avatar mid-move. Writer's Block harnesses a variety of presence platform capabilities, including Passthrough, Gestures, Hand Tracking, Movement SDK, Spatial Audio, Interactables, and Room Mesh.

Challenges we ran into

Initially, our project scope exceeded our available resources, prompting us to scale down to meet our time constraints. We also tackled technical challenges with integrating unfamiliar capabilities and multi-modal inputs.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The new building blocks integration allowed us to rapidly prototype the interactions that were necessary to bring our creative mission into life. Thanks to these new capabilities we were able to spend more time on the overall artistic vision of our application.

What we learned

Exploring novel techniques for physical interaction and interactive reality has shown us how easy it is to harness the advanced capabilities of Meta Quest 3 for rapid prototyping. This empowered us to efficiently explore and implement creative ideas, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in mixed reality development.

What's next for Writer's Block

We intend to expand the application and build it out into an all-in-one app for learning Hip Hop Culture. Writer’s Block offers infinite room for expansion and DLC including licensed music tracks from hip hop legends and street art packs from some of the best artists in the world.
