Inspiration

SJ Garland has been writing for the past eleven years. SJ Garland is now quite disillusioned with the publishing/ agent market for writers. Middlemen largely invest little time and take a disproportionate amount of earnings for completed works. While others risk little to nothing to promote writers work while keeping the writers work completely bound under contracts. The writing and publishing industry is highly competitive with marketing budgets usually coming before all else. The publishing houses often consolidate limiting options for writers. Independent writers are left to redeploy themselves as marketers self-promoting on centralised platforms with seemingly increasing competitiveness.

While its well understood that not all books can be best sellers, the writing, agent, and publisher system appears broken with the writer taking most of the risk.

The project provides an alternative with a case in development.

What it does

The project has writers collaborate with artists to produce a serialised book that drops tokenised chapters weekly. Books become investable while still readable.

Challenges we ran into

Understanding the potential of the NFT and Crypto sectors and how to apply them to a traditional old industry.

Visualising how the industry could work in this new method.

What we learned

Marketing needs to be a top priority. By allowing investors to take the role of publishers in a smaller capacity the risk is diversified for the author launching a book compared with a traditional publisher. Yet the reader still need to be accessible for the new investors to see value in their new NFT book asset.
