Inspiration
Have you ever been walking back home at night and seen someone following you out of the corner of your eye?
You're tempted to pull out your phone, type in your passcode, and enter a phone number - but it's deep inside your bag, and you don't want the person to know that you're planning to make a call.
What if help were just a button away?
Wrist Watch is a Pebble and Android app designed to keep you safe in any situation, not just walking at night. Whether you suspect a home invasion, have fallen and need immediate help, or want to inform your friends where you'll be, Wrist Watch has your back (or wrist, really).
How it works
Wrist Watch has three main features. Once you enter the app, you can use the buttons on the right side of the watch to select one of the options and immediately connect to your phone for help.
Call Emergency Contact When you download the Wrist Watch app onto your Android phone, you will enter in the name and phone number of an emergency contact.
When you press the top button, the watch will connect through Bluetooth to your phone and will call your designated emergency contact.
Call 911 When you press the select button, the watch will connect through Bluetooth to your phone and will dial 911.
Send Text Message When you download the Wrist Watch app onto your Android phone, you will enter in the names and phone numbers of reserve emergency contacts as well as the warning text message you would like to send.
When you press the bottom button, the watch will connect through Bluetooth to your phone and will send your preset text message to your reserve emergency contacts.
Challenges we ran into
We split our team in half, with one team working on the Android interface and the other half working on the Pebble interface.
This was a unique challenge because both sides had to work with languages we had never worked with before LA Hacks. We spent a considerable chunk of time running through tutorials and documentation before we put any code down.
Accomplishments that we are proud of
We are proud that we have made an app that can help people. It is not just for a certain niche market—this app can be used by anyone who needs to get help.
We are also happy with the amount of knowledge we will be walking away with at the end of the day. In less than 36 hours, our team went from not touching the Android and Pebble languages (or even a physical Pebble!) to developing an app that would make a difference in the world.
What's next for Wrist-Watch
- iOS version for compatibility with Apple Watch
- Set multiple preset messages and select which users it will be sent to
