WPI Squirrel and Bunny Seekers

Inspiration

We love bunnies and squirrels! We also love taking pictures of them, but there's no use for a bunch of random animal photos... until now.

How it Works

Take pictures of bunnies or squirrels within a mile of the center of WPI's campus and upload them to the site within a week. A machine learning algorithm will check your photo to see if there are bunnies and squirrels in it. If so, you'll get points depending on the number and clarity of critters spotted in your photo. You can see your photos and everyone else's in the gallery or on a map of campus. The leaderboard shows who currently holds the title for best photographer. We hope you have fun trying to find WPI's cutest furry friends!

I worked on the backend, creating functions to update the database and bucket. I also created the functions to detect bunnies and squirrels using the Google Vision API.

I worked on IAM permissions, spinning up Google cloud infrastructure, and image uploads which took my two different languages to figure out.

Private user
I did pretty much all of the front end UI, starting with making proofs of concept for elements like the image metadata reader and google maps display. I did my best to make design choices that reflected our theme of having fun in the outdoors. IMPORTANT NOTE: You can view example images in the database with username "meearnest@wpi.edu" and password "password", to get a better idea of how a populated site would look.
