Inspiration

I built wovain alone, in whatever time I can find. It turns one sentence into a priced print-on-demand drop on Fourthwall, with paused Meta ads. I've tried hackathons before with other projects, and scope creep plus doing every role alone (building, reviewing, deploying, fixing) always ate the time I had left. This time GitLab Duo agents took on most of those roles, and I steered them from my phone while I was at the gym.

What it does

GitLab Duo agents run every lifecycle stage, with guardrails:

  • Plan: scout files ranked KPI issues.
  • Create: the Developer flow turns an issue into an MR in about 5 minutes.
  • Verify: Duo Code Review catches real bugs.
  • Secure: SAST findings get fixed and shipped by agents.
  • Package: cached, scanned container images. Deploys went from about 25 minutes to about 11.
  • Release: a 10% canary that rolls itself back.
  • Configure: Pulumi infrastructure and flags, changed only through merge requests.
  • Monitor: heal and release-guard diagnose failures.
  • Govern: deps-review holds risky upgrades.

They also know when not to act.

Today heal fixed a live error on its own: #71 → !194, a failing test and the fix, in 5 minutes.

How I built it

Next.js, Mastra and NVIDIA Nemotron on Google Cloud Run. Custom flows live in our GitLab AI Catalog. The sci job measures $SCI = \frac{(E \times I) + M}{R}$: about 21.8 gCO₂e per 1,000 requests, mostly the agents.

Challenges

  • Trusting agents with production: canaries, flags, failing-test proof, and ads always paused.
  • Giving agents real signals: every error, rollback and finding becomes an issue with evidence.
  • Teaching them restraint: no code change unless the cause is code.
  • Taming the review loop: default reviews created endless back-and-forth, so we wrote custom review instructions (blocking findings only) and an ops job that re-requests review only once threads are resolved and CI is green.

What I learned

When I let AI run as much of the work as it safely can, from code to review to operations, I actually ship: wovain is the first project I've taken all the way to the finish line.
