Inspiration
Personally, eating healthy has been too much of a hassle to be worth the effort. Wanted to make an app to fix this issue.
What it does
A solution that makes healthier food an easy option.
How we built it
The application is a flutter mobile app that relies on a “home-cooked” API made from a Python Flask server. It is hosted on Azure which we also use for authentication. The API extracts information from the Spoontacular API for getting recipes and recipe information. User preferences and favorite recipes are handled by CockroachDB which can also be accessed via the API.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle for our development process was getting our backend to work. Although creating the flask server and all its endpoints was a pretty seamless process when it came down to deployment errors were endless til the end. However, we powered through and did more local testing to iron out all the technical problems. Fortunately, Azure is a robust backend with plenty of documentation on how to use it. If it were not for that we would never have finished.
The other challenge was the use of Flutter. Not to say Flutter is not a great tool. Clearly it is and it made creating the UI all the easier. Rather, the hard part came from our inexperience with it. Good thing this is par for the course for us developers.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Neat UI Easy to use Uses a framework we were not so familiar with before the hackathon Custom API endpoint hosted on Azure
What we learned
Business Viability - why our hack would make a good business.
Our solution is the medium that connects the local grocery stores with the people in that area. Using our platform, the users get to find healthy recipes and they can buy all the ingredients straight from our affiliated links. This way, the users are happy to get a healthy diet, the grocery stores are happy to sell more products and we are happy to get revenue from the affiliated links. So, this is a WIN-WIN-WIN situation. Also, as we are using the delivery systems of the local grocery stores (such as Instacart, Walmart, etc), we require bare minimum logistics to expand our business to wherever we want.

What's next for “Would you rather?”
Finish up the application: Add buy option for customers to buy using our affiliated links. User Testing to check what some of the users like and build on it. Polish up the up. Put it in play store and app store.
Partner up with some of the grocery stores. We will try and see who we end up partnering with. We have the following companies in mind:
UberEats. Instacart. Doordash. Walmart. SkipTheDishes.
Once we get at least one partnership for affiliation, we will start our startup on the Waterloo region first. Then, we improve and expand following the user traction and company revenue.
