Inspiration The inspiration for "Would you like to buy fruit?" stemmed from the urgent need to provide a safe and covert method for victims of domestic violence to seek help. Realizing that many victims are often monitored and restricted in their actions, we sought to create a platform that appears mundane, like online fruit shopping, but serves a critical and potentially life-saving purpose.
What it does This project disguises itself as an online fruit store to provide a secure communication channel for domestic violence victims. Users can interact with what appears to be a fruit shopping website to discreetly access information, seek help, and communicate with support services without alerting their abusers.
How we built it We built the project using React.js for the frontend to create a dynamic and user-friendly interface. The backend, planned to be developed with Node.js and Express, will handle secure communications and user data management. As of now, the project is frontend-only due to time constraints.
Challenges we ran into One of the biggest challenges was the time constraint; we had only three days to conceptualize and begin implementing the project after discovering the opportunity. Creating a convincingly mundane front that could also serve such a crucial function required careful planning and design. Additionally, ensuring user safety and data security has been a paramount concern.
Accomplishments that we're proud of We are particularly proud of the dual functionality of the platform—the ability to hide crucial support options in plain sight. Despite the brief development period, the interface we developed is intuitive and ready to scale with additional backend support.
What we learned This project taught us a great deal about the importance of user-centered design in sensitive situations, such as domestic violence. We learned to integrate security and discretion seamlessly into the user experience, ensuring that the platform can genuinely serve those in need without compromising their safety.
What's next for "Would you like to buy fruit?" The next steps for the project include developing the backend to manage secure user interactions and store data safely. We plan to implement database integration for user management and service logs. Future updates will also focus on refining the UI/UX to ensure it is not only functional but also engaging. We acknowledge that the project is not yet professional due to the limited time frame and look forward to making significant improvements.
