Inspiration

Wormhole Multiverse was inspired by the idea of transforming history, science fiction and modern urban environments into one connected strategic adventure. We wanted players to experience the excitement of travelling through a wormhole and arriving somewhere completely unexpected—from the Great Pyramid of Giza to an alien planet or a futuristic city under siege.

Our goal was to combine the accessibility of mobile tower defence with exploration, cultural discovery and meaningful strategic choice. The wormhole concept gave us a natural way to connect radically different worlds while maintaining one clear identity and progression system.

What it does

Wormhole Multiverse is a mobile-first Tower Defense and Strategy game in which the player controls a Dimensional Traveller based at the Nexus Station.

Players travel through wormholes to three thematic universes:

  • Historical: ancient monuments and civilisations
  • Space: alien planets, stations and cosmic threats
  • Modern: contemporary urban battlegrounds

At each destination, players survey the environment, deploy towers, defend a key objective, defeat enemy waves and earn Dimensional Shards. Progress requires completing three increasingly difficult stages, culminating in a Mega-Wormhole encounter.

The game also includes abilities such as Wormhole Dash and Dimensional Rift, hidden artefacts, tower upgrades and Era Fusion, which allows towers from different worlds to combine into powerful hybrid defences.

How we built it

We began by defining a repeatable core loop:

  1. Arrive at a new world
  2. Survey enemy routes and tower positions
  3. Deploy defences
  4. Defend the objective
  5. Complete the site mission
  6. Earn rewards
  7. Select the next wormhole
  8. Escalate to a greater challenge

We then designed the Nexus Station as the central hub connecting every destination. From there, we developed the three-tier progression structure, individual world concepts, enemies, objectives, special mechanics and tower types.

The project was designed for Meta Horizon Worlds using its SDK, TypeScript or JavaScript for gameplay systems, the Meta Horizon Asset Library and custom 3D assets. The planned MVP contains five playable locations, eight tower types, a multiverse map, progression mechanics and the complete deploy–defend–reward–choose gameplay loop.

We also mapped the first 15 minutes of play to ensure a smooth emotional progression:

[ \text{Wonder} \rightarrow \text{Learning} \rightarrow \text{Excitement} \rightarrow \text{Tension} \rightarrow \text{Triumph} ]

Challenges we ran into

One major challenge was creating three visually and mechanically different universes without making the game feel disconnected. We addressed this by using the Dimensional Traveller, Nexus Station, wormhole visual language and shared progression system to unify the experience.

Another challenge was balancing historical and cultural authenticity with entertaining gameplay. Each historical location required recognisable architecture, appropriate enemies and distinctive mechanics while remaining respectful and readable on mobile screens.

We also had to control the size of the project. The complete concept contains many locations, enemies and tower combinations, so we reduced the initial MVP to a focused selection of historical, space and modern environments.

Designing controls for mobile devices was another important challenge. Tower placement, upgrades, abilities and camera movement needed to remain intuitive without overcrowding the interface.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are particularly proud of creating a coherent multiverse that connects ancient history, alien science fiction and modern conflict through one strategic system.

The three-stage escalating progression model gives the project a clear structure while making each new wormhole feel increasingly significant.

We are also proud of the Era Fusion mechanic. Combining towers from different periods—such as an Egyptian solar cannon and a Viking frost ballista—creates memorable hybrid defences and encourages experimentation.

Other accomplishments include:

  • A complete core gameplay loop
  • A structured first-15-minute player journey
  • Distinct visual identities for every universe
  • Site-specific enemies, objectives and environmental mechanics
  • A mobile-first interface and control strategy
  • A realistic phased production and MVP plan

What we learned

We learned that a strong game concept requires more than an interesting setting. Every mechanic, visual decision and progression system must reinforce the central player experience.

We also learned the importance of designing around emotional pacing. Players need moments of discovery, tension, achievement and anticipation rather than continuously increasing difficulty.

Creating the MVP plan taught us to separate essential gameplay from future expansion. Establishing one polished location and a reliable core loop is more valuable than building many unfinished environments.

Finally, we learned that cultural settings require careful research and thoughtful representation. Historical authenticity can enrich gameplay and help each destination feel meaningful rather than simply decorative.

What's next for Wormhole Multiverse

The next step is to build and test the MVP, beginning with the Great Pyramid of Giza level, the tower-placement system and the first enemy-wave sequence.

We will then add the Colosseum and Stonehenge, followed by preview levels set on Mars and in the Bronx. Player testing will help us refine difficulty, controls, tower balance, onboarding and mobile performance.

Future development may include:

  • Additional historical and planetary destinations
  • More Era Fusion tower combinations
  • Cooperative multiplayer missions
  • Daily and weekly wormhole challenges
  • Seasonal universes and limited-time events
  • Expanded artefact collections and character customisation
  • Community-designed levels and world concepts

Our long-term vision is for Wormhole Multiverse to become an evolving strategic universe in which every wormhole offers a new world, a new challenge and a new story.
