Inspiration

Our inspiration came from the struggles Asians face due to the Coronavirus. Hearing news about asians being attacked just because the Coronavirus originated in an asian country is disheartening to hear about. Racial discrimination was what inspired us to make this website. These kinds of acts occur because people do not understand one another’s lifestyle or perspective. Asians or any other ethnicity are all humans so why can’t they come to an understanding? Well, we hope to teach people about all the other cultures out there so they can understand and relate to others as human beings.

What it does

The program displays information about points of interest within the world that we live in. Its purpose is to inspire others to want to learn more about different areas in the world as well as to better understand where people come from. In this day and age, racism and ignorance run rampant throughout our society. Through the use of this program, that others will want to.

How we built it

This web app was built using HTML and CSS with javascript. We used information from articles and images from google to present our ideas. We also used the API provided by one of the sponsors, ArcGIS Online, to show a map of the countries we displayed.

Challenges we ran into

Some of the challenges that we ran into include how to implement the map API from Esri into our program, learning how to do Javascript, as well as how to style the program. We struggled with understanding the complexities of the Esri map interface due to it being our first time utIlizing an API for a project. Another problem that we encountered was trying to connect the back-end and front-end of the project together. Since a majority of the team was more experienced with front-end development, we decided to make the project mainly front-end. This was also due to the limited amount of time we were allotted to work on this project. The last problem that we faced was the styling of the entire project. Choices involving settling on themes and other aesthetic parts were decisions that were difficult to make during the first stages of production.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We accomplished many things throughout the production of this project, but some of the goals that we were most proud of were getting the map API’s to work and the end result of the appearance of the site. We were impressed with how much we were able to complete with the amount of time we had. The end result of the map was our greatest accomplishment with how the information was displayed as well as how the map shows the location. Additionally, the site looks great and the user interface is simple for users with no experience in programming can utilize easily.

What we learned

While working on the project, we learned many things about programming and each other. All of us were unfamiliar with how to implement an API into a project and now we have a good understanding of how to work with one for future projects. Another topic that we learned more about was Javascript. Although our team was familiar with Java, we did not know much about Javascript. We can utilize our knowledge of javascript now to make new projects with more focus on the back-end. Additionally, we were able to have the experience of working in a team which the three of us did not have much of during school. By working as a team we learned more about teamwork and due to the nature of the project, it allowed us to learn more about each other’s cultures.

What's next for WorldVIEW

As for the future of WorldVIEW, there are some areas of the website that could use improvement. One of the simple improvements that could be made in the near future would be to add more countries. The structure would be similar to the countries that we have in the project already, but with more information about the points of interest. Another improvement that could be made would be to optimize the project for mobile users. Presently, the website only works for computer users in fullscreen, but we would like to make adjustments for a better mobile experience.
