Inspiration
Waking up as an engineer is really hard. It is so easy to snooze your alarm and skip your 9am classes, even when you don't intend to. With this alarm clock, we intend to fix that!
What it does
Upon the alarm time being set, the user is prompted to guess the current temperature in the room. If they get the temperature right, they will then be prompted to be louder and less sleepy. Only if their heart rate is higher than 40 bpm, and they make a loud noise while guessing the correct temperature will the alarm turn off!
How we built it
We used an Arduino DUE connected to a grove shield. To measure all we needed, we used a sound sensor, a temperature sensor, and a heartbeat sensor. An LCD screen serves to prompt the user, and a 4-7 segment display allows us to show the time. For the alarm sound, we used a simple buzzer.
Challenges we ran into
Many times our components and sensors were non-functional or challenging to learn. It was difficult to combine all sensors without their codes colliding with one another. Often, implementing a new sensor would break the clock completely. Regardless, we persevered and got it all to work together!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of having gotten so many sensors to work together as one for our project.
What we learned
We learned how to program a variety of sensors using an Arduino. We also learned how to connect and program both a 4-7 segment display and an LCD screen.
What's next for World's best alarm clock
In the future, we want to make user input easier through external components and encoder chips. We also want to make it even harder for the user to turn off the alarm clock, so it is truly impossible to ignore.
