Inspiration

Taking inspiration from games that we spent way too much of our childhood playing, we set out to create a fun, engaging, and nostalgic RPG with self custody. Having seen the wave of atrocious ‘P2E’ games that were pumped out into the crypto space, with terrible NFT’s and generic assets being used to disguise yield farming, we thought, we can do better. We can create a genuinely fun game which does not solely focus on financial incentives and ‘going to 0’ tokens.

What it does

Our current version of the game features real-time PvP combat with several modes, 1V1, team battles up to 3V3, and a Free-For-All Arena (this is super fun and gets pretty wild). There is also a Free-to-play mode.

In-game items are NFT’s and can be minted from within the game, they are directly minted to the players Web3 wallet and are then almost instantly useable within the game.

Currently, players begin with a basic set of weapons but can mint superior items at various shops. Players can take advantage of three different attack types, including melee, ranged, and magik spells.

The transaction system is fully functional and operating on three different chains at the moment (Fantom, BSC, Avax) as we continue to grow the player base. Using our $Magik token, players can mint items on any of these chains and purchase lives to battle in PvP. $Magik tokens can be won in two different ways right now; in 1v1 battles, players use 10 lives to enter with the chance to win 18 $Magik in total. In the Free-For-All mode, players lose 1 life per death and win $1 Magik per killing blow dealt. All winning transactions are executed on the Fantom network for speed and cost.

World of Magik allows for players on Fantom to play in real-time with players on Avax and BSC. The seamless set-up means that players on each network will not even notice that they are playing against people on other chains! This means that we can onboard players from any chain and introduce them to Fantom as final payment settlement occurs on Fantom only.

Factions are already available to join, there are currently eight in existence and are comprised of other crypto projects and their communities. We have a decentralised tournament system in which anybody can set-up and host a tournament, setting entry fees, rewards and even allowing for token gating via faction NFT’s for private tournaments.

How we built it

We started with a very basic concept, which was more of a community hang-out space with mini games such as ‘fire-tag’ and a maze run. We actually saw pretty good levels of engagement, especially upon launch and with scheduled events. This set off a spark to develop something much bigger, with much greater depth. Looking at the way that financial products would ideally exist within this space, we drew parallels between that idealistic view and our game. So the basic premise is to develop a game that has a more than one method of interaction in order to satisfy several different types of players/users. There is a financial component built in which is the use of our native assets, players have to put up $Magik to battle each other or mint items, other players will be looking to score loot drops from PvE raids, some users may not want to or have time to play the game, so they can interact solely with the staking offerings in which we have plenty of different types. The fees generated from gameplay and staking always loop back to users in one way or another.

This whole game so far has been built by one Unity developer and one solidity developer. We have a business developer and a project manager. Outside of that we have some community engagement leaders and mods. We will continue to expand our team as and when we can due to the scope of our ambitions, we definitely would like to speed along development as we are never short on ideas!

Challenges we ran into

Developing a game requires significant resources by way of finance and time. Being a small team with no VC investment or loans, we have had to bootstrap all funding via products we developed and services we provided. This is a truly ground-up, grassroots team with big ambitions who have overcome huge adversity via continually worsening market conditions. Budget constraints and market conditions have not stopped us but have sometimes slowed us down. This also led to a major decline in engagement, hosting a weekly AMA session called Magik Monday in our discord, we saw active listeners drop from 120 a week to around 20!

Timezones! Our team members are from all over the world, including the UK, USA, and Australia. Somethings can therefore lag a day or two when communication is required but we get there in the end.

As previously mentioned, the onslaught of what were marketed as ‘games’ did cause users to be skeptical of new games emerging from within the space. We have done our best to focus on product development to produce an enjoyable experience rather than draping a cloak over financial trickery. Players can earn playing our game but this is not a Play-to-Earn game!

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Surviving the bear market! Fantom took a real beating over the last year with collapsing narratives and liquidations, we stayed lean and nimble with the ability to consistently pivot. We actually ended up generating enough profit to not only survive but also grow. We expanded our team and poured a relatively significant amount of resources into the game development. All of this was achieved through providing services instead of dumping team tokens on investors or taking OTC offers / VC funding.

What we learned

Focus on the product and cut out the noise, this can be a very fickle space with yield chasers and 100x demanders, these are not the people who we are building for!

They say a picture is worth a thousand words so make sure that your meme game is strong.

What's next for World of Magik

We are currently transitioning the graphics to fully 3D. This will allow us to create a huge open world full of life and things to do!

Continuous development of the games depth through items, abilities, tournaments and PvE. As we increase faction participation, we will see a rise in our consistent player base. Creating healthy competition between factions will be one driver of eco-system unification under the World of Magik banner. Ultimately allowing other protocols to build within the world, create store fronts and have players interact with their products from within the game using their native assets.

Development of PvE. The introduction of solo/team raids in dungeons and tombs will be the logical next step in expanding our world and playability. Through this, we can deepen not only item selection and attainability but effects and abilities gained via items, creating sets for armour and weaponry which offer specific bonuses and skills when used against specific ‘types’.

We continue to target organic methods of onboarding players not only to our game but to the Fantom chain. As previously mentioned, faction competition is one of those methods, as will be the omni chain interoperability which our game already offers.
