Inspiration

My childhood fantasy stories served as the inspiration for this lens. Most of us believed in the existence of mermaids and this lens is my way of bringing that fantasy to life.

What it does

Switching between the front and back cameras of this mermaid-inspired lens will give you two distinct fantasy experiences.

When using the front camera, you can become a mermaid with shell and pearl-adorned eyelashes, and your mermaid ears will move with your head movements. You can also control a jellyfish-like pet called Squishy, whose body is filled with sparkles, by using your hands as a controller.

When you switch to the back camera, you can become a mermaid whose entire body is shown, including the mermaid tail, and you can look out upon the sea from the eyes of a mermaid.

How we built it

Using full-body tracking and UV segmentation masking in the Lens Studio, I was able to construct this lens, which was enhanced by baking tricks and techniques in 3D modeling software such as Cinema4D and Maya. Additionally, Snap AR hand tracking, Physics, VFX and internal scripts from our own library were employed to bring this deep sea dream to life.

Challenges we ran into

Creating a seamless experience utilizing multiple render targets and cameras simultaneously is a challenging task; consequently, it was hard to assemble this lens when it was in its early stages.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I accomplished my goal of creating a seamless and smooth experience lens.

What we learned

I have gained a lot of knowledge while creating lenses, such as full-body UV masking techniques, which has helped me to understand the core concept of this lens.

What's next for World of a Mermaid

The next step for World of a Mermaid lens could be to add more features to the lens, such as the ability to add more mermaid-themed props, backgrounds, and effects. Additionally, the lens could be updated with new animations, special effects, and even a voice-over feature. Finally, the lens could be used to create an interactive experience by providing users with the opportunity to pose for pictures and record short videos with their friends.
