Inspiration
With the 2026 World Cup approaching, we wanted to capture the childhood nostalgia of collecting physical football cards and combine it with the excitement of live match predictions. We noticed a gap in the market for a fast, mobile-friendly daily game where fans are actually rewarded for their football knowledge with fun, digital collectibles rather than just numbers on a leaderboard.
What it does
World Cup Hero (https://worldcuphero.com/en) is a fast-paced, mobile-optimized prediction game built for daily engagement. On our platform, fans can:
- Predict Matches: Make quick daily picks on upcoming World Cup fixtures.
- Earn Points: Successfully predicting match outcomes rewards users with in-game points.
- Unlock Card Packs: Users can spend their earned points to tear open digital football card packs.
- Collect Cards: Build and manage a unique collection of football star cards, blending sports prediction with the thrill of digital collecting.
How we built it
We designed World Cup Hero strictly with a mobile-first approach to ensure it feels like a native app. The frontend is powered by Next.js and React, styled beautifully with Tailwind CSS for a responsive, snappy UI. The backend relies on Node.js and MongoDB to securely manage user accounts, prediction statuses, point balances, and card inventories.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest challenge was designing a balanced virtual economy. We had to carefully tune the point rewards for predictions against the cost of card packs to ensure the game remains rewarding but still keeps rare cards feeling special. Additionally, creating smooth, satisfying "pack opening" animations that run perfectly on mobile browsers required intense optimization.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are extremely proud of the core gameplay loop. The process of logging in, making a daily pick, earning points, and experiencing the thrill of opening a new digital card pack is seamless and highly engaging. The mobile UI is exceptionally clean and intuitive.
What we learned
Building this project taught us a lot about gamification and virtual economy design. We also significantly improved our skills in optimizing complex frontend animations and managing scalable databases for user inventories.
What's next for World Cup Hero
Our next major step is to introduce a "Trading Market" where players can swap duplicate cards with each other. We also plan to release special "shiny" or limited-edition cards during the tournament's final stages, and implement a global leaderboard for the top collectors!
