Inspiration
Our inspiration for the project started with a website that helped people, specifically disabled people find and create hackathon teams. Over time it evolved into a social media for developers to share their portfolios and connect with likeminded individuals.
What it does
Work Along With Me is a web-based social media platform where programmers, software developers, and computer science students can showoff their projects, building an online portfolio for themselves. In addition, users are able to scout out people with similar skills and reach out to them in order to collaborate.
How we built it
We built the website and front-end using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, while the back-end was primarily Python, Flask, and SQL. The user login authentication system was done through Auth0's service using Flask., with their data being securely stored. The website data such as each users username, skills, projects etc. was all stored using a Tiger Data database. This made accessing and storing user data much more convenient.
Challenges we ran into
One of the challenges we ran into was how to integrate the Auth0 authentication service into our website. We first started by utilizing it through JavaScript, which led to the login not being loaded and leaving us unable to log in to our out website. We overcame this challenge by eventually shifting to Flask, where out more extensive python knowledge helped us configure the Auth0 login portal.
Setting up the GoDaddy domain also proved to be challenging. While getting the initial domain was easy, setting the app on Flask, setting it up a Cloudflare tunnel to the local Flask server, and then making that Cloudflare tunnel go to the actual domain I set up on GoDaddy proved to take some waiting and was challenging to finally get right.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One Accomplishment that we're proud of is being able to quickly configure the social aspect of out project. By the end of day one and beginning of day two, we were able to follow other users, post original content, and like said content. This allowed us to flesh out more of the website, allowing users to have their own online portfolio on a secure platform to meet other like-minded users.
What we learned
One thing we learned was how to develop a social media esque platform while making sure users data was securely stored. Additionally, we learned how to use and SQL database to store vast amounts of information without any being lost, corrupted stolen.
What's next for Work Along With Me
Next, we hope to expand on Work Along With Me by further developing it as an online portfolio-sharing platform. Specifically, adding features such as a content filtering system, dedicated on-site messages and compatibility with services that actually host the project itself, such as Github.
We would also like to add logistical or more technical aspect of the websites, such as allowing the server to run on multiple threads, or having like some proper censorship and moderation tools.
