Wordscapes, Wordle

What it does

A new level gets posted daily. Swipe to find all the hidden words, and earn hints by swiping any valid word not in the hidden word list. The built in level creator can be used to make custom UCG puzzles, in addition to daily levels that get auto posted each day. The game is also setup to allow for custom themes throughout the year, for instance seasonal themes like Halloween and Christmas. A new spring theme has recently been added.

How we built it

Using PIXI.js, Typescript, Webpack and Devvit API, and Webstorm for the IDE. Affinity designer was used to create all the vector art. Also, openai API is used to generate daily levels automatically. Standard development practices were used throughout, with exhaustive testing of new features, and regular commits to Github. Testing throughout was carried out on both desktop and mobile to ensure a smooth experience across platforms.

Challenges we ran into

The weekly leaderboards were tricky to get working, and hard to debug due to the long time scale of resets etc. But they are working now and are a welcome feature, where players can compete for the highest XP and most gold medals each week, with a post on Sunday at midnight, London UK time, announcing the winners.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The game has built a small but active community in a short time. It is also quite neat how it supports both landscape and portrait for desktop and mobile respectively, using the same assets and themes for both.

What we learned

How to increase engagement with Redditors.

What's next for Wordungus

More seasonal themes are coming when appropriate, as well as one off events.
