Inspiration
Inspired by the goofiness that ensues when trying to write with those fridge magnet poetry sets, and easy-to-pick-up Jackbox creative writing games, I wanted Word Scrap to capture that same feeling in a bite-sized experience
What it does
Word Scrap is a tiny web game about answering prompts with a limited vocabulary. (Think those fridge magnet poetry sets.) Get creative with the scraps to submit the funniest answer!
Entries are posted as Reddit comments, and the community votes on the winners, who are rewarded with a medal in their user flair.
How we built it
Starting with the React Devvit template, I constructed a robust word bank using popular dictionaries. Making sure players get a good spread of sentence-making words (ie verbs, nouns, suffixes, punctuation etc), I create a deterministic hand for each post so every player has the same word set.
From there, it was just a matter of building out the very simple UX flow of prompt > answer > vote > reward.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
I love the way this turned out visually. Clean simple shapes, but a nice tactile feel to everything snapping into place as you tap the words.
Also getting a good mix of word types was quite an undertaking, something I'll definitely continue to refine.
