Word Dial

Word Dial is a concentric ring crossword puzzle where users race the clock to fill in overlapping words on each ring using clues, then aligning all rings to find the final hidden word.

Inspiration

Wanted to make a modern twist on a classic game while adding in new mechanics.

What it does

5 concentric puzzle rings, which need to be filled using clues. Every word on the rings overlap with the next word, making it easier to fill a ring as you find words. Once all of the rings are filled, a final clue is revealed requiring the user to align the rings and find the final word.

How we built it

Uses an extremely long list of English words, an algorithm to find overlapping words for each ring, and guarantee each ring can be aligned to find a final word. Clues are generated from a database of clues.

Challenges we ran into

It is difficult to pick a new set of words that are overlapping AND can be aligned into a final hidden word!

What's next for Word Dial

Working on a single player mode for players to practice their skills, and themed daily puzzles for words related to specific niches.
