How might we support individuals with medical needs and reduce health complications after a devastating event such as natural fires?
Gieia, named after the Goddess of Healing, is a mobile app designed to connect individuals who have lost medical supplies with resources and community support. The app provides 3 key features for its users:
- Information about health popups near the user's location
- Resource articles that spotlight different programs users can utilize to get back on track
- A community forum that allows individuals to request / provide help to others
In researching this project, I relied primarily on white paper research. I read articles about the LA wildfires and reddit posts from people affected to understand the core issues people were facing. From this research, I discovered that users lack a centralized platform to learn more about medical resources and knowledge in the wake of a disaster. Another theme was community support, as individuals frequently noted their location and wanted to know how others in their community were doing. These insights led me to design Gieia in a way that supports community engagement and provides a wealth of emergency health-related information to its users.
It is my hope that a solution like Gieia empowers people to take charge of their health no matter the circumstance, and encourage others to contribute to their community through mutual aid support.
