Inspiration

  • Mismatch of pets for adoption vs pet adopters at a geographic area
  • Lack of awareness for adoptable pets around me
  • Collapsing shelters are usually the middle man. Why not P2P?
  • Different process for each shelter, no standardized process.
  • No tracking of pet history as yet, not leveraging the data to make informed decisions.

What it does

  • Each adopter and pet have their own profile
  • Standardized Application Platform - eliminating the need for re-applying dozen of times for different shelters with different platforms

For adopters, the profile includes critical criteria like :-

  • Home style - House? Apt.? With garden?
  • Time owner spend at home per day - How much time will you spend with your pet?
  • Pet Requirements - Kids friendly? More mature? Cool with hair loss?
  • Why do you want a pet? - Relaxation? Loneliness? Friend?

Profiling pet Owner - Private person? Shelter? Physical description - Color, size, type, gender, age.. Characteristics description - Temperament, activity level, moods, compatibility History / Why a new home - Street found? Abusive family? Moving?

Profiling people interested Every person has a rating based on the previous feedback, and this rating will help a lot in deciding whether one should select that particular user for his/her pet.

Fixing Animal's Market Failures The app is able to track and match user’s searches, user’s desired pets, and more in order to draw a supply & demand curve. Once the situation is clear, ‘Best Friends’ and any other organization will be able to reallocate resources in order to eliminate the market mismatch; get rid of surpluses and shortages around the U.S and prevent the daily shelter’s animals killing.

How we built it

We built this on a different framework that can create prototypes of the app

Challenges we ran into

This is my first hackathon, and we are a team of two including me. I took care of documentation, idea generation and 'connecting the dots', and the other developer took care of implementing it. We only had one developer, so it is a big accomplishment for us in completing the project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

I am proud of completing the project on time and have a video demonstrating all the features clearly.

What we learned

Since this was my first hackathon, I've learnt a lot about how to come up with a related idea, as a result of design thinking, and start working on it. Also learnt the new framework, how mobile app development is done.

What's next for WoofWoof!

We've already talked to local shelters in Boston about this idea and they were impressed with the concept. We'll release the product and start with local shelter houses first and then scale up to users becoming a pure peer to peer system for animals, making their lives easier.
