Inspiration
WOMIG was founded with a powerful goal: to assist migrant women and individuals compelled to migrate due to climate changes - climate refugees who are compelled to leave their homes and communities due to the effects of climate change. Understanding the enormous challenges that these individuals face, WOMIG has made it their mission to offer vital resources and services to help them in their migration journey. Climate change still deeply affects millions of people worldwide; hence, we realize it is now more critical than ever to assist those in need. WOMIG's work empowers these vulnerable communities by providing them with hope, support, and new possibilities for a better life.
What it does
The platform provides interactive maps that show areas that are vulnerable to natural disasters and other emergencies, as well as how to access emergency services and local resources for food, shelter, job training, and education. The app helps users find others facing similar challenges, share experiences, and build a sense of community and support. In addition, the app offers educational resources on sustainability and climate action, empowering users to contribute towards positive changes in their communities.
How we built it
To build a simple website that includes a map, I used HTML and CSS. HTML provided the structure and content of the website, while CSS was used to style the website and add the map. Specifically, I utilized a mapping API to generate the map view and then embedded it into my HTML document using an iframe.
Challenges we ran into
During my first solo hackathon, I faced the challenge of not having any prior coding experience. As a result, I had to start from scratch and learn about programming concepts from the ground up. This included understanding basic syntax, data structures, and algorithmic thinking. I found it challenging to keep up with the pace of the hackathon while also taking the time to properly learn and understand new concepts.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a non-technical person participating in my first hackathon, I faced with the challenges. However, I am proud to say that I persevered throughout the event by seeking guidance from mentors and leveraging online resources to build my technological skills. Despite being new to coding, I was able to complete a project that aims to address climate-related problems in our society. I feel that this experience has not only strengthened my technical skills, but also taught me about the importance of tenacity and resourcefulness in problem-solving.
What we learned
I acquired fundamental coding knowledge, including HTML and CSS, for the first time, as well as essential soft skills such as time management and problem-solving.
What's next for WOMIG
For tech side,to create a website and mobile application, I will leverage web development technologies and choose the most suitable programming languages and frameworks to handle the necessary tasks. To incorporate interactive maps, I will utilize GIS technologies to integrate location-based services into the platform. By gathering relevant data, I can populate a database using efficient tools such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB. Additionally, I will create a social aspect of the app, allowing users to interact and store user data using a backend programming language, such as JavaScript, Python, or Ruby. Maintaining user authentication and data storage will also be taken care of in the backend.
For the future of the project, WOMIG is open to collaborating with organizations committed to addressing climate action, migration, and gender equality.
