Inspiration

Women’s safety is a critical concern in today’s society, with rising incidents of harassment and delayed emergency responses. We were inspired to build a solution that uses the power of mobile technology to bridge the gap between distress signals and timely intervention. The motivation came from real stories of delayed help and the urgent need for a simple, reliable, and accessible safety tool.

What it does

The app functions as a personal emergency response system for women. Key features include:

Shake-to-SOS: Trigger emergency alerts instantly by shaking the phone.

GPS Live Tracking: Share real-time location with pre-registered guardians.

Offline SMS Alerts: Works even without internet connectivity.

Background Services: Runs silently to ensure uninterrupted monitoring.

Guardian-Child Chat: Enables two-way communication for quick support.

Vibration Feedback: Confirms that SOS alerts have been successfully triggered.

How we built it

We built the app using Flutter for cross-platform compatibility, integrated Firebase for real-time communication, and implemented GPS services for live tracking. Background services were developed to ensure functionality even when the app isn’t open. SMS APIs were used for offline alerts. The UI/UX was designed to be minimal, intuitive, and fast, keeping accessibility in mind.

Challenges we ran into

Implementing reliable shake detection without false triggers.

Maintaining real-time GPS updates with minimal battery consumption.

Ensuring offline functionality for users without internet access.

Balancing security and privacy while handling sensitive user data.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Successfully built a prototype with all core features working (SOS, GPS tracking, SMS alerts, chat).

Developed a system that works even in offline conditions, making it more dependable than many existing apps.

Aligned the project with UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 5, SDG 11, SDG 16).

Created a socially impactful solution that can make a real difference.

What we learned

How to integrate background services effectively in mobile apps.

Importance of designing for low-resource environments (offline mode, battery efficiency).

The role of UX design in building apps for safety-critical scenarios.

How collaboration with NGOs, government schemes, and telecom providers can enhance scalability.

What's next for Women Safety – Mobile Application

Partnering with NGOs and government safety initiatives for nationwide deployment.

Adding voice-based SOS activation for accessibility.

Multi-language support for wider adoption in rural and urban India.

Exploring AI-driven anomaly detection (e.g., detecting abnormal movement patterns).

Building a global version adaptable to region-specific safety protocols.
