Inspiration
The inspiration behind our Women Safety App came from real-life stories and concerns expressed by friends, family members, and the wider community. Many women feel unsafe while traveling alone or hesitate to speak up about their mental well-being. We wanted to build something that not only ensures physical safety but also provides emotional support—something proactive, empathetic, and easily accessible.
What it does
The app is designed to be a smart companion for women, offering features like:
- ✅ Shake-to-Alert emergency trigger
- 📍 Real-time location sharing via SMS
- 📞 Quick emergency contact dialer
- 🧠 AI-powered chat support using Perplexity Sonar Pro API
- ⚠️ Unsafe area detection via map overlays
- 💬 Safety-related content and mental health resources
It monitors user inputs for distress signals and, upon detecting terms like "depressed" or "suicidal", sends an emergency message to the user’s trusted contact automatically.
How we built it
We used:
- Flutter for cross-platform mobile development
- Firebase for authentication, real-time database, and cloud messaging
- TomTom Maps API for geolocation and mapping unsafe areas
- Perplexity Sonar API for building an intelligent, empathetic chatbot
- Telephony for SMS functionality
We focused on creating a seamless and intuitive experience, particularly in high-stress situations, and ensured all emergency features were accessible quickly.
Challenges we ran into
- Ensuring location sharing worked accurately in areas with poor GPS signal
- Calibrating the AI to respond sensitively to mental health-related keywords
- Building a UI that is non-intrusive yet functional under pressure
- Maintaining a balance between user privacy and the need for quick emergency alerts
- Minimizing app latency while ensuring dependable background services
Accomplishments that we're proud of
- Successfully creating a real-time, responsive emergency alert system
- Integrating an emotionally aware chatbot that feels supportive, not robotic
- Designing a minimal and effective UI suitable for crisis moments
- Building a robust prototype from scratch within a tight timeline
What we learned
- How to create AI-powered tools that are emotionally intelligent
- The importance of mental health integration in safety solutions
- Real-world applications of hardware interactions (like shake detection)
- Best practices for secure and real-time communication on mobile apps
What's next for Women Safety App
We plan to:
- Add support for multiple languages to make the app more inclusive
- Partner with local law enforcement for direct alerts
- Include voice command capabilities for hands-free emergency triggers
- Launch a community safety feed for real-time updates on local incidents
- Improve the chatbot with more context-aware emotional intelligence
