Inspiration

It is common knowledge that women face harsher medical outcomes from not being taken seriously by doctors and from living in a world designed for men. Though commonly known, people often don't have the facts about how this actually affects them. We wanted to provide an understandable resource for women to learn about the health disparities they face and have access to mental health resources. Another important factor that prevents women from seeking treatment is financial. We provide this website to everyone for free, and emphasize free and low cost resources.

What it does

The website contains many resources about women's health ranging from mental health topics like depression, to informational and research articles and women's health disparities. It encourages women to seek medical help more often, sooner, and build the confidence to be more insistent to their doctor. This confidence is built by providing advice about talking to doctors and by providing factual information with sources that can be given to the doctor to review.

How we built it

We primarily used HTML to build the website. The chatbot was made using Google Cloud. The newsletter subscription was made using Twilio.

Challenges we ran into

Integrating the chatbot with the website. Separate team members were making the website and the chatbot and we were unable to get the chatbot code working on the website itself.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud to have found so many resources and stories to help women through health and healthcare issues. We feel that we've highlighted the disparities women face in everyday life that they often don't realize.

What we learned

We learned about structural barriers and specific instances of women being treated unfairly. Many safety systems were designed around men's bodies and are thus only proven safe for men. Stories about women going to doctors and not being taken seriously lead to women being in pain longer and possibly having a worse outcome for lack of rapid treatment.

What's next for Women's Health Hub

We would like to develop a free subscriber base where users can input state/county/local resources and stories on the topic of women's health. We would want a system that holds links dynamically so that they stay most up to date. By this we mean links to events will be archived after the date of the event. For example if a COVID-19 testing pop-up center occurs on a specific date, after that event the link would no longer be an upcoming events section and the website would inform the user that uploaded the link of that change.
