Inspiration
The members on our team are all strongly passionate about STEM fields. As high schoolers and junior high schoolers, we saw in our communities the lack of women and girls in STEM fields. Many work forces are comprised of men while people who are underrepresented make up for just a fraction of those jobs. Our goal is to create a website that educates others about diversity and inclusion and presents a resources for users to collaborate and discuss.
What it does
Our website aims to encourage young women or people of unreprinted communities a way to see the path that are possible for anyone, no matter who they are. It also allows them to talk or meet with mentors and professionals in the field they are interested in so they can be guided for new opportunities and careers. Finally, our goal was to allow young people the change to be themselves and to explore what they are passionate about by collaborating with peers or mentors with similar goals.
How I built it
As a team, we built this website using Replit and HTML, CSS, bootstrap, and Figma. From the home page, we added a navigation bar with tabs leading to different pages about empowerment. Additionally, on the front page, we have a summary of the website on a carousel. Using Figma, we created the design for the Virtual Reality communications where users could interact with role models.
Challenges I ran into
A few of the challenges we ran into were communication, time zones, and saving work. Communication was a problem for us because of the time zone difference and the time constraints of each individual. We worked around this challenge by setting up times that we could check in during one of the meetings so we wouldn't have to keep communicating solely by chat. Another obstacle we faced was saving our work. At one point, the changes of the last hour's work disappeared; however, we were able to retrieve it and we continued to save our work throughout the rest of the project.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Some accomplishments we had as a team was collaboration, expertise, and an amazing final project. Collaboration really helped us bring our strong points to the team, so we came up with an idea that we were able to implement within the time. Additionally, we understood each other's strengths and used that to split up the work that was most beneficial. Last but not least, together, we created a website that accurately displayed our goals and ideas. Our website reflected all of our ideas while working around the same central idea of empowerment. As young women in our communities, we all wanted to face this and as a team, we felt like we accomplished our goal of spreading awareness and lending help to those who are underrepresented.
What I learned
Throughout the course of the hackathon, we learned how to use Replit, how to use Figma, and how to communicate despite challenges. As it was our first time using Replit, we found many difficulties in code differences and saving errors; however, we helped each other learn from it and apply it to our project. Also, to create our design we learned how to use Figma to create an interactive design that could accurately represent our ideas. Finally, we learned how to communicate our ideas, support each other in our work, and that we can learn so much from our teammates.
What's next for Women En Power
We hope that our website will inspire young women to pursue their passion in STEM and to hopefully use the communication forums to help them understand the careers and stories of mentors and peers. If we were to further improve Women En Power, we would allow more space for the users to express themselves because people can easily forget their passion if they don't have somewhere to start. This would include Thinking spaces, checklists, goals, and so much more so that ideas can come to life and that they understand that they can achieve what they want to do.
