Inspiration

As reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, as at 2022, there were only 44 women CEOs in the Fortune 500 US companies. With all the progress women have made in the workplace, they are still lagging in leadership roles—not just as CEOs but in lower management positions too. Also, in a research carried out by Pew Research Center, 15% of female employees do not receive enough support from their supervisors, compared to their male colleagues. The observations made above, led us to carry out a survey of our own and we discovered that most women from the age of 18 to 40 struggle with impostor syndrome and find it hard recognizing mentors in their space, not to talk of taking advantage of the relationship they have with these mentors. Based on this, we decided to create a mentoring application called WOMEN (WOmen MENtoring). An app that helps women realize their professional dreams.

What it does

WOMEN is a mobile application that connects Women to mentors and helps them maximize their relationship with these mentors. A list of possibilities with our app are:

  1. Organizations can also empower their female employees to reach their full potential
  2. Encourage personal and professional growth
  3. Build confidence and overcome impostor syndrome
  4. Provides networking opportunities
  5. Fosters a sense of community

How we built it

We created our high-level prototype with the use of Figma. However, as both team members are Power Platform developers, we plan on taking advantage of Power Platform for the final development of this application, using the Agile methodology.

Challenges we ran into

  1. Working in sprints over the weekend to come up with a suitable solution
  2. Getting responses to our survey just in time for our submission
  3. Working with Figma for the first time, to create a working prototype that can be easily accessed by the judges

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  1. We got overcome our fears of using a new prototyping solution, Figma and created a working prototype that reflects our application vision
  2. Despite being located in two different countries, we collaborated well, to come up with a solution that would make a positive impact on women and help in addressing critical Equity issues
  3. We got to participate in Avanade's first IWD hackathon.

What we learned

This hackathon has been a great learning experience, as we took out time from family over the weekend to create an app we are proud of. We learnt a lot about issues women face in identifying mentors and keeping up with the demands of the fast-paced work space. We learnt that with an application that helps address these concerns, we can help women to gradually overcome their fears and be their best selves. Finally, we learnt to use a new prototyping tool Figma in this process.

What's next for WOMEN App

We hope to improve on the application, create the first Most viable product (MVP) and actually get it available for women to address their needs. We hope to build on this application and when we achieve success in meeting the needs of the professional woman, extend the application to women in other fields.
