Inspiration

I was diagnosed autistic very late, similar to many autistic women. Only 20% of girls are diagnosed before 11, compared to 50% of boys. Most resources for Autism on the internet either focus on boys or childhood Autism, leaving many autistic women feeling stranded.

You go from feeling alienated all your life to feeling alienated in your own community.

To combat this, I designed Woman on the Spectrum, a website tailored to late-diagnosed autistic women, free of male bias.

What it does

It links autistic women to support networks, teaches self-regulating and educates them on misconceptions in the autistic community.

How we built it

The website was built using html, css and vanilla javascript.

Challenges we ran into

I haven't been learning web design for very long, so it is still quite new and challenging for me. This was the first time I've used the css grid. It was also a struggle to make the website responsive and look good on both laptop and mobile. But I'm very pleased with how it came out!

What's next for Woman on the Spectrum

I would love to continue adding more information to Woman on the Spectrum. As time passes, there will inevitably be more controversies and I would love to make the website as detailed as possible in general.

Firstly, I would focus on improving detail, finding more support networks and swimming tools for example. Then, I think it would be good if autistic women could connect with each other on the website, so I would like to design a way for them to do that in the future!
