Inspiration The limited socialization amongst students during this pandemic inspired us to create this app. It's now more clear than ever that we thrive and grow from social interactions, especially in academic environments where we rely on friends at the dorm, or strangers in the library to keep us in check. We've seen a surge in the number of people gravitating towards online chat spaces, virtual study rooms, and organizational apps to hold ourselves accountable. However, juggling three organizational apps, one productivity planner, a timer, three friends while trying to finish the Chemistry assignment can be stressful and cumbersome. So, we bring an all-in-one package to make studying fun, facile and fruitful.

What it does

This is a space for organizing goals for a study session with your friends and motivating each other. You can manage your own list, ping people to work on tasks on theirs/congratulate them when they finish, and set a group-wide timer for work.

How we built it

We began with a paper prototype to figure out the number and the layout of the screens for the application. Then we built the front end using Android Studio with Java and the back end in Java using Firebase for database support.

Challenges we ran into

All team members had to learn new technologies in order to contribute, whether it was Android Studio or Firebase. Integrating parts that individuals had worked on and integrating the front and back ends also presented a challenge. The difference in time zones was an inconvenience but we communicated on what had to be done and made sure everyone was on the same page.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We were able to learn quickly enough to keep up with the demands of the project and were able to finish implementing planned components by the deadline.

What we learned

Almost everything we used with Android Studio and Firebase was learned while working on the project.

What's next for WOCO

We would be interested in broadening the functionality of the app, e.g. supporting more than one room (scaling up), UI fixes for a smoother experience, and adding a group progress bar at the top, an idea we talked about that we ended up not having time to implement. We are also looking to explore chat options.
