Problem that you are trying to solve and its significance

We aim to solve issues where elderlies or people with disabilities face fall risk due to having to navigate to night switches at night.

Inspirations for solutions

Smart Home Technologies. The market solution for this is smart home technologies but we find the cost to be troubling, especially for elderlies. With an upfront capital investment of 1 to 5k to change all the circuitry components it's not feasible for people most affected by nighttime fall risks.

How the solution is special/unique

Our solution is

  1. First in the market
  2. Simple yet intuitive
  3. Low cost and easy to implement
  4. Highly scalable

How the product is meant to be used

The product consists of two components:

  1. Sensor Component
  2. Servo Component

Setup: Attach the sensor conveniently to a place that's easy for the user. In our reference case, we put it beside the elderly's bed because that's where they can navigate the sensor safely or even automatically when waking up at night. Secondly, attach the servo component to any switch. Upon activating the sensor, the servo component will toggle the switch accordingly.

The technologies or techniques used

Key Technologies and Techniques

  • Arduino: Coded through Arduino to support the functionality of the prototype
  • Ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04): Used for the motion detection component of the prototype
  • Servo: The servo automates the pressing of the light switch

Key challenges

  • Issues with the Arduino library
  • Our first time coding on an ESP32, so we had to research and learn new things
  • Being an interdisciplinary team: Business, Engineering, and ICT

The product as a business and/or at scale

  • How We Plan to Scale

    • Massive market: Commercialisation
    • Mass production: Economy of scale
  • Future Applications

    • Voice Activated Sensors: Still Cheaper than smart home technologies, and easier for the elderly to use than smart home technology
    • Future Expansion Plans: Build a lifestyle brand centred around accessibility and inclusivity (WobbleGlow)
  • Industrial Applications

    • Switches could be hazardous in a factory setting that involves a lot of dangerous machinery.
  • Line Expansion

    • Aesthetic: Could include Other designs that appeal to children and the elderly
    • Functionality: Expand the line to more than just switches and also use other sensor forms
