Inspiration

All three of us love trivia, logic puzzles, riddles, and challenges, and we wanted a fun new trivia game to test our abilities. However, we also wanted a time-based game so users could not be cheated out by people using Google. The viral nature of BeReal combined with an exciting game form inspired us to make Wizdom.

What it does

Every day at 7 PM Central, the Wizdom is released and users try to answer the questions as quickly as possible. Users who get all 6 questions correct and finish in the top 10% of times get prizes. We use Google Ads and split this revenue evenly among the winners.

How we built it

We spent a lot of time building the app on React Native in hopes of eventually releasing it on the App Store. The demo shown is built on code.org using their app studio.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest issue we faced was time. As much as we wanted to finish the entire app, we realized late Saturday that although we had made a lot of progress, there wouldn't be enough time to finish it enough to demo on the emulator. We made the decision for the team to split time with some of us working on the app itself in React Native and others doing the code.org demo so we could submit the working prototype for the demo. The code.org demo is finished and works (more working features exist than only what is shown in the video), but the app itself may not be finished for a couple of weeks.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of our ability to find a solution when we realized we wouldn't have enough time to complete the full app. It would have been much easier to quit but we worked through it and were able to submit a good prototype along with our in-progress code.

What we learned

Two of us learned how to use Typescript and React Native since we had never used either before. We also learned that in future Hackathons, being able to create a finished product within the weekend is better than making an amazing idea that probably cannot be completed in the timeframe. Despite this, we don't regret this decision because it was an awesome learning experience and we are excited to release the app in the future. Finally, all three of us became more familiar with project structure and management, which is very useful for future development.

What's next for Wizdom

In the future, we will finish the app and release it on the app store. We will fully integrate Twilio to verify users and advertise and grow the game. We're very glad we did this hackathon since it inspired us to create and (eventually) deploy Wizdom!
