Inspiration

We feel that people new to an area struggle to make friends. We feel that one of the quickest ways to bond is through a shared journey.

What it does

Our app Wizard Walker aims to match travelers embarking on similar journeys and incentivize them to walk together. Users earn "Mana" by traveling together, which they can use to cast spells and change the look and feel of the app.

How we built it

We built Wizard Walker using Expo as a base for the mobile app. The app interfaces with a Java server and MySQL database to match users together and store their stats.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into many challenges throughout the hackathon, with the most difficult one being integrating each team members work into a cohesive project. With enough grit and determination, we turned our individual ideas into Wizard Walker.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For many of us, this was our first hackathon and our first opportunity to collaborate with other ambitious hackers, and we rose to the challenge. Successfully deploying our backend services and connecting them with our frontend was incredibly difficult but rewarding, and we're very proud that we managed to do so.

What we learned

Before this project, most of us had never touched React, let alone React Native, yet we successfully learned the framework from the ground up and applied it to deliver a working product. It was a similar story with databases, and we really made something we're proud of.

What's next for Wizard Walk

We would love to add support for more than 2 users to walk together. We also wanted to add an easy way for users to enter a walk together, such as touching phones or connecting to the same wifi network.
