Inspiration
We wanted to make a financial literacy app that was both educational and interactive for the player and taught a few core pillars of financial literacy. Some of these pillars are: having savings built up for emergencies, maintaining good customer relationships, and investing in the long-term growth of your business without overextending and having no cash reserves (cost vs benefit, investment, budgeting)
What it does
Our game has the player managing a shop in a fantasy world. The two main components of the game are the interactive and managerial portions. The game has different levels/days and each day starts with the managerial portion where the player chooses how much of each good to stock and the quality level of each good (each of which influences the total money spent). The player can also add the number of tables to their business, increasing the number of customers they get as well as adding decorations to improve customer relations, which increases tipping and therefore revenue. Each level has different events (natural disaster, new character, etc.) prompting the user to make smart financial decisions. During the day (interactive portion), the player serves customers as they enter their shop, and their speed of service influences their reputation and tipping.
How we built it
We designed the scenes from the game in Canva mockup and gathered assets from Canva and various online asset databases. We used Unity to program the game.
Challenges we ran into
Our team was unfamiliar with Unity so we faced challenges when executing code for the game. We also have many ideas that we had to execute.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Our team is very proud that we were able to develop a game concept and mostly execute the game design. We also learned an entirely new software/program.
What we learned
We learned the process of storyboarding for games, the game development process in Unity, some of the quirks of C#, and proper version control using Git.
What's next for Mythical Money Manager
We'll continue learning about the Unity engine in order to implement our initial design specs.
