Emotif
Harness your Emotions, Empower your Life
Inspiration
We were inspired by our personal academic journeys and the type of support and application we would have liked to use. With the growing conversation around mental health among university students, and the stress of balancing studies with personal lives, we envisioned Emotif as a supportive companion. It’s designed to help students prioritize their well-being while staying on top of their academic goals.
What it does
Emotif is an AI-powered plugin for students' personal calendars. It analyzes their daily schedules, mood patterns, and past activity preferences to provide personalized suggestions for leisure activities. The goal is to encourage breaks, reduce burnout, and help students recharge in ways that align with their emotional and mental states.
How we built it
We developed Emotif using React.JS/Next.JS for the frontend, Gemini AI, and Firebase for the database. Sentiment analysis and emotion detection were implemented using machine learning libraries. The plugin integrates with personal calendar platforms, analyzes historical data, and uses recommendation algorithms to suggest leisure activities that a student can do to improve their wellbeing.
Challenges we ran into
One major challenge was ensuring the emotion detection was accurate and respectful of privacy. Also coding the database and backend did prove to be difficult in understanding the integration between already built calendars. Integrating multiple data sources seamlessly into a cohesive plugin was another technical hurdle. Additionally, finding the right balance between automation and user control was critical to avoid overwhelming the user with suggestions.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud of creating a tool that merges technology and well-being to address a real need among students. Building an intuitive interface and achieving meaningful activity recommendations were milestones we’re excited about especially agreeing that this is something that we would use ourselves. Our teamwork communication was excellent and we are proud that each team member executed their tasks to the best of their ability.
What we learned
We learned the importance of user-centric design, especially for tools aimed at improving mental health. Working on Emotif also deepened our understanding of emotion-based AI and the complexities of integrating behavioral data with technology.
What's next for Emotif
Our next steps include expanding to a mobile application with its own unique calendar, introducing integrations with location accessibility to suggest places in your current city to visit and explore and enhancing emotion detection with real-time data. We also plan to focus on user feedback to refine recommendations and make Emotify an essential well-being tool for students everywhere.
