Inspiration

I volunteered at a soup kitchen and I realized I can make an impact on my community by doing so. I see the need as I walk around my city everyday. I can't begin to imagine the toll homelessness takes on the human psyche. Worrying about food insecurity, safety, and mental health struggles can add insurmountable amounts of stress. Unfortunately, many people "fall off the grid" and are not able to receive the help they need. Maybe they don't know where to look for it, or don't trust it. Other people may try to help, but don't know how to support their fellow neighbors.

What it does

My project is essentially a resource hub for people in need, people looking to help or other people who just want to volunteer. My project aims to put resources to connect people with the help they need, therefore alleviating some of the mental toll homelessness takes on people.

How we built it

I used HTML to format a working website equipped with all the information I could find.

Challenges we ran into

I am a bit rusty in HTML, so I essentially relearned the language as I went along. This is also my first hackathon and I was working alone. It was definitely a lot to take on and I was worried I had bitten off more than I could chew.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Creating the website! Making the Art and incorporating it as I combined my love for art with my love for computer science.

What we learned

I learned to be persistent, and just try something. Even if you fail, you will learn more by attempting than not trying at all.

What's next for With Care, Your Neighbor Project

I would like to partner with LinkNYC to make it a resource available at all of the free Internet Hubs across the City. I would also like to take it to The New York Public Library.
