Inspiration
The idea for Wisteria came from my experience building one of the most popular social apps for the queer community. Through that experience, I saw how difficult it can be for people to openly share their feelings, questions, and identities because of privacy concerns, fear of judgment, and the growing number of scammers on social platforms. I realized that an AI companion could provide a safer and more private space for people to talk, explore, and be themselves without the pressure that often comes with interacting with strangers online. I also saw a strong need for self-validation and self-discovery within the community. With Wisteria, users can create and interact with different personality types, helping them better understand who they are, what kinds of relationships and personalities they connect with, and what they truly want. Wisteria was created to be more than an AI chat app—it is a private space for connection, exploration, and self-discovery.
What it does
Wisteria is an AI companion app designed for the LGBTQ community, offering a private and judgment-free space to talk, explore identity, and build confidence. Users can create and interact with different AI personalities to better understand themselves, discover what kinds of connections they enjoy, and express thoughts they may not feel comfortable sharing with real people.
How we built it

Challenges we ran into
One of our biggest challenges was prompting and tuning the AI model to better understand the diversity and nuance of the LGBTQ community. Many existing models still tend to make assumptions based on traditional categories—for example, treating gender as simply male, female, or non-binary—when real identities are much more diverse and personal. We had to carefully design prompts, character profiles, and conversation rules so Wisteria could respond inclusively, avoid assumptions, and adapt naturally to how each user identifies and expresses themselves.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We’re proud to have built an AI companion and interactive story app specifically for the LGBTQ community. Wisteria creates a more inclusive experience where users can explore identity, relationships, and different personalities through private AI conversations and personalized stories designed to reflect a broader range of gender identities, orientations, and experiences.
What we learned
We learned that most AI companion apps on the market still focus mainly on the traditional “AI girlfriend” or “AI boyfriend” experience, leaving a clear gap for more inclusive and diverse relationships. We also discovered that prompting and tuning a model for LGBTQ users is surprisingly challenging, especially when it comes to avoiding assumptions around gender, identity, and attraction. Through a lot of experimentation, we found an approach that makes the AI feel more flexible, inclusive, and natural for a much broader range of users.
