Inspiration
As women in STEM it can be difficult to connect to other women with similar interests without being put down by others. We want WiSTEM to be a place where women and gender minorities have a positive environment to grow professionally, technically, and personally.
What it does
The main feature is connections. Each individual can connect with organizations through their schools, workplaces, and clubs. Additional ways to connect are through specific interests via our forum pages. The forum pages can additionally used as a knowledge resource for everyone. Another feature is our projects page where individuals can post their projects for others to browse and ask questions. This is a good tool for collaboration. It serves in tandem with our job search page that connects gender minorities in STEM with companies that value diverse perspectives. Finally, we have a page where individuals can post fun pictures of their pets in order to destress and bond over their love of animals.
How we built it
We built it through Figma.
Challenges we ran into
As a new-to-us interface, it was challenging to understand functions, uses, and implementations of the tools in Figma. Neither of us have done much in UI/UX interfaces, so it was a difficult but fun change of scenery.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
One of us pulled their first all-nighter. (Go Ashley!!!) Otherwise, we're proud of what we've accomplished in the last 24 hours given our limited starting knowledge in Figma and other coding. Bonus: We're very proud of the pet page.
What we learned
We learned a lot about how to use Figma (how to link pages, make pages interactive, etc.) We also learned a lot about Constellation Ventures and their Focus on Female Founders initiative.
What's next for WiSTEM
We want to learn how to make this into a fully fledged website or app with additional functions that bring different communities together. It will be important to get a starting user base and companies that fit our mission statement.
