About the Project

Inspiration

The inspiration for Wisr came from my personal experiences with mentorship and the transformative impact it can have on learning. I recognized a gap in accessible mentorship platforms that prioritize knowledge over appearances. I wanted to create a space where individuals could connect based on their expertise and interests, facilitating personal and educational growth without the distractions of superficial judgments.

What it does

Wisr connects eager learners with mentors across a wide range of subjects—from everyday life lessons to complex academic topics. By using a swipe-based matching system, mentees can express interest in mentors based on shared goals and areas of expertise. The platform fosters an inclusive environment by not requiring profile pictures, ensuring that connections are made based solely on knowledge and experience.

How we built it

I built Wisr using a combination of technologies, including React Native for the mobile app interface, Firebase for backend services, and MongoDB for data storage. The project began with wireframing the user interface to visualize the user experience. I focused on developing a smooth swiping mechanism for mentor-mentee matching, along with email communication features for post-match interactions. Throughout the process, I iteratively tested the app to refine functionalities based on user feedback.

Challenges we ran into

During the development of Wisr, I faced several challenges, including:

  • Creating an Effective Matching Algorithm: Developing a system that accurately matches mentees with mentors based on shared interests and goals was complex.
  • Ensuring User Privacy: Balancing transparency in mentorship with the need for privacy and safety was crucial. I had to implement robust measures to protect user information.
  • User Engagement: Keeping users motivated to participate actively in the mentorship process required careful design and gamification elements.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We take pride in developing an effective user matching system within Wisr that accurately connects mentees with mentors based on shared goals and expertise. This innovative swiping mechanism not only enhances user engagement but also simplifies the process of finding meaningful mentorship opportunities. Additionally, we are proud of how much we’ve learned throughout this project, from understanding user needs to refining our technical skills. Most importantly, we are thrilled to know that Wisr is making a positive impact by fostering connections that empower individuals to grow and learn from each other.

What we learned

Through this project, I learned valuable lessons in user-centered design, the importance of user feedback, and the technical aspects of building a full-stack application. I also gained insights into the dynamics of mentorship and the varying needs of users seeking guidance. This experience reinforced my belief in the power of mentorship as a catalyst for personal and educational growth.

What's next for Wisr – Connecting Mentors and Mentees for Educational Growth

Looking ahead, I plan to enhance Wisr by integrating features such as:

  • Feedback and Review Systems: Allowing users to provide feedback on their mentorship experiences, helping improve the matching process.
  • Resource Sharing: Introducing a section where mentors can share resources, articles, and tools relevant to their areas of expertise.
  • Community Features: Developing forums or group discussions to foster a sense of community among users, enabling peer-to-peer learning and support.
  • Expanded Reach: Actively marketing the app to increase user engagement and broaden the range of subjects and mentors available.

With these enhancements, I aim to solidify Wisr as a leading platform for mentorship and learning, connecting individuals for educational growth and personal development.
