Inspiration

My inspiration for this is really personal because I have a good amount of my friends on Snapchat but I still tend to forget their birthdays and they remember mine, which isn't a fun conversation to have. I've never been the one very good with dates in general. The only person's birthday I can forget is my sister's birthday. She helps me remember everybody else's birthdays but she doesn't know all my friends so she can't remind me for everybody.

What it does

Wish Me turns the birthday data already sitting in your Snapchat and Facebook friends lists into a real reminder system. Instead of asking you to manually type in dozens of birthdays, you record a short screen capture scrolling through your friends list, and Wish Me extracts the names and dates automatically. From there it schedules reminders, suggests custom messages, and surfaces gift ideas — so birthdays stop depending on your memory

How we built it

Flutter — single codebase for Android and iOS OCR pipeline: ffmpeg_kit pulls frames from a screen recording, google_mlkit_text_recognition reads the names and dates off-device Duplicate review screen to clean up overlapping OCR reads before saving Relationship tagging to personalize reminders and message suggestions Local notifications + digest reminders, kept in sync via a dedicated coordinator Calendar sync for users who want birthdays in their native calendar RevenueCat for the free trial and paywall

Challenges we ran into

OCR accuracy varies by device and scroll speed — solved with a duplicate-review step instead of forcing a redo Keeping individual reminders and digest notifications in sync, without duplicates or misses No birthday API exists for Snapchat or Facebook, so screen-recording + OCR was the only path to avoid manual entry

Accomplishments that we're proud of

The thing that I'm most proud of is getting everything to work with RevenueCat because I've had previous side projects where I tried using Stripe and other systems for payments. It never just clicked and always seemed like I was missing something. For the first time I got my Apple Developer's license so I'm really proud about that.

What we learned

One thing I can say that I learned is that with every passing day the world just gets a bit easier. With that ease it gives you the opportunity to bring your dreams to reality because five years ago this app will have been just an idea in my head or a line I wrote in a notebook. Today it's a working musical product that my friends have access to and the whole world will have access to.

What's next for Wish me

My next step for this is growing my user base by just starting out now so maybe this might change very quickly and give it more personalisation. Right now it's just a notification, just a simple reminder. My next steps for it are:

  • Personalised cards that people can send you links to on your birthdays and you can just store them. Whatever nice messages they write on them, you can always come back and look at them and it's just something nice.
  • They want to be more than just birthdays. That's why we are not staying with a birthday reminder app. Instead it's called Wish Me. I can't wish you anything: happy graduation or wedding, your cat's birthday. I'm just here to wish you.
