Inspiration

Everyone and especially students have to strike a balance between time, money and social life. All of them are equally important and a compromise on any of these aspects can have a negative impact on the student's life.

What it does

This application lets a person create a group with friends whom he/she would like to meet. Every group has an associated date on which the group intends to meet. Every member of the group updates his/her start location and states the type of place they would like to meet at i.e bowling alley, restaurant etc. The application suggests places of the selected category/categories which are near a location that is equidistant to all members of the group. This application also shows reviews and ways to commute to the chosen destination. After the meeting, the expenditure that had been incurred can be updated on the app. Thus, the application also allows the user to keep track of expenses involved in these trips.

How I built it

I used ruby on rails, bootstrap, javascript and Google API's to build it.

Challenges I ran into

Lots of compatibility issues between gems (used in rails) . Working in a single person team (maybe it should not be called a team) within a time constraint is definitely a challenge.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I could calculate the central location given any latitude and longitude and suggest places of a chosen category that are around this central location. I could end to end development of an application. I have a background in Systems and Networks and building this application was definitely not easy.

What I learned

That long hours of coding can actually be productive :)

What's next for WiseMeet,app to meet friends at an affordable location

I have long term plans to evolve this application. I want to extend this application to allow a ** group of people ** to plan vacations in such a way that the commute distance, commute cost and commute time is as optimal as possible for everyone in the group. This is very substantially different from the way in which vacations are manually planned by a group of friends who want to meet (typically through a discussion on Whatsapp and each of them checking Expedia). This can open up new opportunities for recommending hotels, flights, restaurants etc.
