Inspiration
The Inspiration: My Grandfather My grandfather, lived in Tamil Nadu, while I grew up in Kerala. He was a proud, independent man, deeply attached to his home and surroundings. Despite our repeated requests for him to come live with us, he refused to leave Tamil Nadu—he felt a strong connection to the place he had spent his entire life in.
Both he and my grandmother lived alone. Though they had each other, they had no one nearby to help them with daily tasks. My parents and I were constantly worried—what if they needed urgent medical attention? What if they ran out of essentials? What if something happened, and we wouldn’t know in time?
As they got older, these concerns became more serious:
My grandfather struggled to keep track of his medications and sometimes forgot to take them on time. Their mobility issues made it difficult to go grocery shopping or visit the hospital when needed. If there was an emergency, we were miles away, and there was no way to reach them immediately. I remember the constant worry in my parents’ voices when they spoke to my grandparents over the phone. “Are you eating properly?” “Did you take your medicine?” “Is everything okay?” But no matter how much they cared, distance made it impossible to be there when it really mattered.
That’s when I realized: What if there was a way to bridge this gap?
What if we could create a system that ensured elderly individuals like my grandparents could live independently but never feel alone?
That’s how Wise Care was born.
What it does
Wise Care: More Than Just an App—A Real Solution
Understanding the Real Problem
When I started thinking about Wise Care, I asked myself: What does it really mean to support elderly people?
- It’s not just about health monitoring—it’s about knowing someone is there when they need help.
- It’s not just about reminders for medication—it’s about ensuring they actually take them, even when they forget.
- It’s not just about location tracking—it’s about making sure they feel safe, without feeling like they’re being watched.
- It’s not just about delivery services—it’s about making sure they have food, medicine, and help, even if they don’t know how to order it themselves.
I spoke with my parents, family friends, doctors, and elderly individuals to understand their struggles. Wise Care had to be more than just a platform—it had to act like a real-life caregiver, even when no one was around.
What Wise Care Does
Wise Care is a complete support system for elderly individuals, ensuring they live independently while staying safe and connected to their loved ones.
1. Proactive Health & Emergency Response 🚑
- Real-time health monitoring using IoT devices to track vitals like heart rate, movement, and sleep patterns.
- Smart alerts notify family members if there are unusual health patterns or missed medications.
- Emergency SOS button (wearable or voice-activated) allows elders to call for immediate help.
- Automatic fall detection alerts trusted contacts and nearby caregivers.
- Instead of just notifying family members miles away, Wise Care immediately contacts a local caregiver or emergency services when needed.
2. Daily Assistance & Human Support 🏡
- On-demand personal assistance for groceries, hospital visits, household chores, and companionship.
- Medication & grocery deliveries scheduled automatically based on their needs.
- If an elderly person is struggling at home, they can request help from a trusted assistant with a single click.
3. Social & Emotional Well-being 💬
- AI-powered virtual companion engages elders in conversations, reminds them about their favorite activities, and helps them reconnect with family.
- Local community engagement connects elders to social events, hobby groups, or scheduled video calls with loved ones.
- Wise Care ensures that elders don’t just survive—they thrive.
4. Security & Peace of Mind for Families 🔒
- Real-time updates keep family members informed without the need for constant check-ins.
- If an elder misses medication multiple times, the system notifies a trusted neighbor or medical professional instead of just sending reminders.
- If an elderly person wanders outside a safe zone, the system first calls them, then alerts a family member, and if needed, contacts a local helper to check on them.
Building Wise Care the Right Way
Creating Wise Care wasn’t just about adding features—it was about making sure everything worked seamlessly in real-life situations.
💡 User-Friendly Design – Elders don’t need to navigate complex menus. We ensured everything works with simple taps, voice commands, or automated actions.
💡 Smart AI & IoT Integration – Wise Care analyzes patterns in health and activity to predict risks and alert caregivers before problems arise.
💡 Partnerships for Real-World Support – Wise Care is not just an app—it connects with local caregivers, medical professionals, and delivery services to ensure real, on-the-ground assistance.
How we built it
We built Wise Care by integrating AI, IoT, and cloud computing to create a real-world elder care solution that ensures both proactive healthcare and real-time assistance. Our system collects real-time health data from wearable IoT devices, analyzes patterns using AI, and alerts family members or emergency services before a crisis happens.
To make Wise Care accessible for elderly users, we designed an intuitive mobile app with voice assistance and local language support, so they can easily request help, track medications, and stay connected. For on-the-ground support, we partnered with caregivers, pharmacies, and hospitals through APIs to provide real-world assistance like grocery and medication deliveries, doctor consultations, and emergency response.
A dedicated platform for family members allows them to monitor their loved ones' health, receive alerts, and stay updated on their well-being in real time. Additionally, an admin panel provides centralized monitoring of all elderly users, allowing healthcare professionals and caregivers to track data, analyze trends, and ensure timely intervention.
Security was a top priority, so we implemented end-to-end encryption to protect sensitive health data. One of our biggest challenges was ensuring elderly users could use the platform effortlessly—we solved this by simplifying the UI, integrating voice commands, and automating key services.
Challenges we ran into
Building Wise Care came with several challenges, from technical difficulties to ensuring real-world usability for elderly individuals. Here are the key obstacles we faced and how we tackled them:
1. Elderly Adoption of Technology

2. Real-Time Health Monitoring & Emergency Response
- Health data needed to be collected, analyzed, and acted upon instantly in case of emergencies like falls or irregular vitals.
- Solution: We optimized our backend using edge computing for faster processing and integrated AI-powered anomaly detection to predict risks before they became emergencies.
3. Ensuring Immediate On-Ground Assistance
- Digital alerts alone weren’t enough—elders needed physical support for medical emergencies, groceries, and daily care.
- Solution: We partnered with local caregivers, pharmacies, and hospitals through APIs to provide real-world assistance, ensuring elders weren’t left helpless.
4. Security & Privacy of Sensitive Health Data
- Handling personal medical data meant we needed strict privacy and compliance measures.
- Solution: We implemented end-to-end encryption, secure cloud storage, and user-controlled data access, ensuring compliance with privacy laws like GDPR and HIPAA.
5. Managing Large-Scale Monitoring for Admins
- Families and caregivers needed a centralized way to monitor multiple users without overwhelming them with unnecessary alerts.
- Solution: We developed an admin panel where healthcare professionals and families can monitor health trends, receive critical alerts, and analyze real-time data efficiently.
6. Handling Different User Needs & Customization
- Every elderly user has different requirements—some need health monitoring, while others need social engagement and companionship.
- Solution: We made Wise Care modular, allowing families to customize services based on their needs, whether it’s daily check-ins, emergency monitoring, or personal assistance.
7. Scaling & Affordability
- Many elder-care solutions are expensive, making them inaccessible to middle-class families.
- Solution: We created a tiered pricing model, offering a free basic plan and affordable premium features, ensuring Wise Care is accessible to everyone.

What we learned
1. Elderly Users Need Simplicity Over Features
- Initially, we focused on adding advanced features, but through user testing, we learned that ease of use is the most important factor for elderly individuals.
- Lesson: A simple, voice-assisted UI with one-tap access is far more effective than a feature-heavy app.
2. Real-Time Response is More Important Than Just Data Collection
- Collecting health data is not enough—quick action is critical.
- Lesson: Instead of just tracking falls and vitals, we built an alert system that notifies family members and caregivers immediately when something goes wrong.
3. Not All Emergencies Are the Same
- Some elders might need urgent medical help, while others just need assistance with daily activities.
- Lesson: Wise Care had to be customizable, allowing families to choose different levels of monitoring and assistance based on their loved one’s needs.
4. Security & Privacy Are Top Concerns for Families
- Handling sensitive health data required us to prioritize privacy while still ensuring that the right people (family, doctors) had access.
- Lesson: End-to-end encryption, user-controlled permissions, and secure cloud storage are non-negotiable.
5. Elders Need Human Support, Not Just Digital Assistance
- While AI and IoT can predict risks and automate alerts, elders still need human interaction and real-world help.
- Lesson: Partnering with local caregivers, hospitals, and delivery services made Wise Care a true support system, not just another app.
6. WhatsApp Integration for SOS is a Game Changer
- Many elders don’t check apps frequently but use WhatsApp daily.
- Lesson: Adding an SOS button that sends WhatsApp messages to emergency contacts made Wise Care more practical and user-friendly.
7. Families Need a Single Place to Monitor Their Loved Ones
- Having health data, emergency alerts, and check-in updates spread across different platforms was confusing for families.
- Lesson: The family dashboard became essential, allowing relatives to monitor health, get alerts, and schedule assistance from one central place.
8. Testing With Real Users is Crucial
- What we thought was easy to use wasn’t always intuitive for elderly individuals.
- Lesson: Constant user testing and feedback helped us refine Wise Care to be more accessible and practical.
9. Affordability Matters
- Many elder-care solutions are expensive, making them inaccessible for middle-class families.
- Lesson: Offering a free basic plan with affordable premium options ensures Wise Care can reach more people who need it.
