Inspiration

We live in region heavily damaged by COVID-19. As engineers we want to design an easy to use tool to help people and medical staff.

Today remote patient monitoring is an hot topic that aims to reduce the economic and social impact of the COVID-19. Hospitals are facing an emergency situation and to avoid overcrowding medical staffs are assembled out of the hospitals to take care of patients at home. Often the monitoring process is based on direct phone calls or in house medical examination. Automation and remote monitoring usage is not widespread because of cost and complexity related issues.

We are designing a smart-plaster with embedded sensors and wireless communication that can monitor different vital parameters.

What it does

WTPO measures SpO2, body temperature, heart rate, breath rate, blood pressure and body position.

The device is wireless connected to an app via Bluetooth to:

  • Configure acquisition parameters
  • Collect data
  • View values trend
  • Manage alarms
  • Send the data remotely to the medical staff

Their monitoring is important for early contage sympthoms detect and fundamental during illness follow up. Our aims is to simplify both house and hospital remote monitoring process. While typical SpO2 devices use fingertip, WTPO uses direct optical reflections technology that allows measure on skin surface (PPG). All the sensors are embedded in a plaster that can be installed by the medical staff on the patients to be monitored. WPTO is connected via Bluetooth to an app that can be used to configure the device and read data. The app can then be used to transfer the data remotely to the medical equipe.

Benefits

  • Remote monitoring
  • Continuous monitoring
  • Reduce medical staff pressure

Use case scenarios

  • Home / hospital patients wireless monitoring
  • Automatic data collection and population monitoring

How I built it

We identified all main components and currently we are designing the hardware. To speed up development we are testing the firmware on evaluation boards.
