Inspiration

Despite the gender gap and all obstacles in the technology field, we usually don’t even know the stories of the women pioneers in the computing world. That’s why we created Wired Women, a newsletter that provides users to learn the story of one woman in tech at a time and to empower them in the computing world.

What it does

Wired Women displays a sample random story of life from a woman in tech, and asks for the user to write an email in order to receive a personalized email with a story of a woman in tech and a picture of her.

How we built it

  • First, we planned our wireframe in Balsamiq.
  • We used React for the front-end and Python's FastAPI for the back-end.
  • We also used the Twilio SendGrid API to send the emails.
  • We used the APIEvangelist Women In Tech database as well.

Challenges we ran into

  • Fetching the data from the JSON file.
  • Being banned from Twilio due to a wrong file posted.
  • Connecting the front-end with the back-end to send information from a form to a json.
  • Connecting front-end and back-end with a python file.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Implementing sending emails using sendgrid.
  • Displaying a random figure from the JSON file on the page.

What we learned

  • Collaborating in GitHub as a team.
  • Connecting front to back using FastAPI.

What's next for Wired Women

  • We would like to add social signup with firebase instead of simply entering an email.
  • We would like to use Docker to host the back-end and include access to the mailing list in our link.
