Inspiration

I was inspired to take on this project from the work I did in last year's Mellon-Sawyer Seminar held at Pitt called "Creating Data (and Absence) From the Quantitative to the Digital Age," and by my work as a journalist, where I learned the importance of reporting accurate information.

What it does

My policy proposal is limited in scope so I could go into detail in my argument. Here, I argue that Twitter should aggressively locate malicious bots and remove them from the platform.

How I built it

I researched aspects of online disinformation until I found an area that interested me. I enjoyed reading so much from a field outside my own.

Challenges I ran into

I knew that in order for my proposal to be effective, I needed to keep the focus narrow. I had to revise my original focus as I did my research and wrote the proposal.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

I think I am more well-versed in the issues surrounding malicious bots now that I have done the research. I am also excited to have written the policy proposal, which is a genre I have never tried before.

What I learned

I wasn't aware that bot detection is actually challenging! There are a few strategies researchers have proposed.

What's next for Wipf Hacking4Humanity Policy Proposal

I hope to incorporate the policy proposal genre or the video pitch into my teaching. Both would be great assignments if I teach Composing Digital Media for the English program.
