📖 Inspiration
We set out to create a game that makes place value practice feel like a cyber‑attack response. Inspired by retro hacker movies and arcade classics, we built Wipeout – where every correct answer is a pulse‑pounding purge of an infected sector.
🎯 Our mission: transform math practice from a boring chore into an adrenaline‑filled experience where students don't just solve problems – they save the system.
🕹️ What It Does
Wipeout is a fast‑paced tactical math game that challenges players to identify and "wipe out" specific digits from multi‑digit numbers.
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| ① | A multi‑digit number appears (e.g., 6,734) |
| ② | A target digit is highlighted (e.g., the 7) |
| ③ | Calculate its place value (e.g., 7 × 100 = 700) |
| ④ | Type the value on the keypad and press WIPE! |
📈 Difficulty Progression – 3 Phases
| Phase | Levels | Digits | Mechanics |
|---|---|---|---|
| 🟢 Training Grounds | 1 – 5 | 3‑4 digits | Arrow points directly to the target digit |
| 🟡 Fog of War | 6 – 10 | 5‑6 digits | No arrows – count place values yourself |
| 🔴 Double Purge | 11 – 15 | 7+ digits | Multi‑target challenges (wipe multiple sectors) |
✨ Core Features
- ⏱️ Countdown Timer – arcade urgency that keeps hearts racing
- 🖥️ Retro Hacker Aesthetic – glitch effects, neon text, sci‑fi soundscapes
- ✅ Instant Visual Feedback – green flash + particle burst for correct, red flash + screen shake for wrong
- 🤖 Friendly Corrections – an AI‑powered chatbot explains mistakes with humor
- 📊 Score & Accuracy Tracking – monitor your progress in real time
- 🎉 Celebration Effects – confetti explosions for every perfect purge
🛠️ How We Built It
| Technology | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Unity 6 | Game engine – physics, rendering, and logic |
| C# | All gameplay scripting and UI control |
| Unity UI + TextMeshPro | Crisp, high‑quality user interface |
| Particle System | Dynamic visual effects and celebrations |
| WebGL Build | Play instantly in any browser |
| Android SDK | Native mobile deployment |
🚀 Development Journey: Started with Unity's AR Foundation for an AR math experience, but when phone compatibility issues arose, we pivoted seamlessly to WebGL – keeping all the visual polish intact.
🚧 Challenges We Overcame
| Challenge | Solution |
|---|---|
| Zero Unity Experience | The developer built a complete 15‑level game from scratch in days – learning the editor, C#, and game architecture on the fly |
| Phone Compatibility | Planned AR‑based game → pivoted to WebGL when ARCore wasn't supported on the target device |
| Keeping It Engaging | Designed 3 distinct difficulty phases to prevent boredom and maintain flow |
| Visual Polish | Added retro hacker effects (glitch, neon, particles) to make it feel professional |
| Time Management | Built, tested, and deployed a complete game within the hackathon timeframe |
🏆 Accomplishments We're Proud Of
- ✅ Complete 15‑level game from scratch
- ✅ Retro hacker aesthetic with glitch effects and neon visuals
- ✅ 3 difficulty phases with increasing complexity
- ✅ Live timer adds arcade‑style urgency
- ✅ Visual and audio feedback for every action
- ✅ Cross‑platform (WebGL + Android)
- ✅ Fully functional keypad with hover and press states
- ✅ Celebration particles for correct answers
- ✅ Friendly correction messages for wrong answers
- ✅ Score tracking with accuracy percentage
📚 What We Learned
- Unity development from absolute zero – editor, C#, and game architecture in days
- Creating interactive UI systems – keypads, buttons, and real‑time feedback
- Building for multiple platforms (WebGL + Android)
- The power of visual feedback for reinforcing learning
- Game design for education – making learning feel like play
- Pivoting quickly when technical challenges arise
- The importance of progressive difficulty for maintaining engagement
🎮 How To Play (Quick Start)
- Read the Mission – a number and a target digit appear.
- Calculate the Wipe Value – multiply the digit by its place value.
- Enter the Value – use the on‑screen keypad.
- Press WIPE! – watch the feedback and score.
- Level Up! – purge 3+ sectors to advance
