Inspiration

We took heavy inspiration from Undertale for how the battle mechanics would function. In terms of the story, we thought it would be novel to take a humorous approach to the zombie apocalypse. In a way, it was a commentary on how the world doesn't stop just because the world stopped. Robin (our main character) still needed to go to school, so that's what they do. While grumbling about it.

What it does

This is a 2D top down game that has you fighting (or avoiding!) zombies as you try to collect your school supplies from around town before school starts. Which, if you asked Robin, was not their fault and the zombies should stop stealing their backpack.

How we built it

Noah created the game using GameMaker, in the language gml (specific to GameMaker). All the art was done in Procreate using a custom pixel brush setup by Faith.

Challenges we ran into

GameMaker is not designed to work collaboratively in real time, so there wasn't an easy way for us to both work on the project at the same time. Luckily it worked out that sprite/art would take the entire time, but it was a hurdle nonetheless.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Faith was especially proud of finetuning her pixel art process in Procreate, which allowed for the perfect gridding of assets as she made them. Noah was proud of figuring out the process of making the battle system work and getting the enemies to operate correctly.

What we learned

Noah learned a lot about GameMaker, and is excited to take all his learnings back with him to his own personal project. Faith learned some basics of GameMaker, and some tricks on creating large amounts of pixel art assets in a short amount of time.

What's next for Zombies Keep Stealing My Homework!

Perhaps in the future we will scale the game to include a more robust and compelling storyline, a character creation mechanic vs just having the character Robin, and expanding into a multiday storyline with scaling difficulty.
