Inspiration

All the team members share one common thing: they've all came to study aboard into a country that has a harsh winter. No previous preparation, not enough tips, not enough idea of what it takes to cope the Canadian winter in a healthy way. That's why we all though on building an app that help newcomers on everything they need to know in their first winter.

What it does

Encourages you, informs you, and helps you to cope the winter in a healthy way by providing features such as: countdown for the season change, a roadmap for sticking into healthy habits, and a checklist for vitamin (D) control.

How we built it

We used Java programming language for developing the app, and Spring Boot framework for an easy, quick, and smooth deployment of it. Designers used Figma for GUI design, and classic web dev triad for merging front and back ends together.

Challenges we ran into

Seeking for completing the challenges offered by MHL, we tried implementing the database communication (for storing user info) with Mongo DB. This was a great challenge to use considering we knew how to establish the app-db communication throughout SQL. Implementing a NoSQL solution was challenging, however, we successfully met our goal.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

As previously mentioned, we are proud of implementing the DB with MongoDB. Also, we are really proud of the designs our designed crafted. Finally, we are really proud of the fact that we positively worked together, as a team, and successfully completed our idea <3.

What we learned

As our first Hackathon, we learned a loooot of things. Things like what we are cable of doing, and what are our areas of opportunity. How does a Hackathon really works. The importance of effectively organizing our time: the importance of effectively managing our own health (we discovered that even though resting means hours of NO-CODING, it's still crucial, for a well functioning).

What's next for WinterPal

Even though we don't really think our idea is profitable, or scalable to become a large business, we are really invested on helping this niche community we ourselves have been part of. A first winter in a new country for newcomers is NOT easy, and we want to be there, to help, as possible.
