Inspiration
We noticed that there isn't a resource that we can use for all our winter sporting needs. We would have to use a variety of resources which just makes it difficult to get all your information. Our product lets users get all their winter sporting needs in one place. By combining rental/school places, a map with links to places, tips/guides, and more, the user gets a lot of information without having to switch websites.
What it does
Our website gives users a variety of information. We have a map which simulates how businesses would show up on the map (so users can see what is near them), guides on how to buy skis and what kind of skis are recommended, the beginnings of a blog which gives more information on certain brands, and a directory where the user can filter through businesses by price/quality/recommendations.
How we built it
We used a bootstrap to start with and did a lot of research about skis to write up the information for our website. Then we changed color codes, created/found visuals, and worked on the UI/UX of the website. We decided to use logos we created to simulate businesses that would register with us to form the directory where the user can filter through the different businesses. We were able to link a Google Maps API which simulates how users can find businesses in certain areas and can easily go to the business website.
Challenges we ran into
Two of our teammates are beginner coders and this is their first hackathon which slowed us down a little bit (but that's okay because everyone learned something new). Some of our files wouldn't upload and our code kept crashing, but we pushed through it with patience and got everything to work.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that two of our teammates made an amazing project in their first hackathon. We're also really proud of the UI/UX of our website which is really clean and user-friendly. The fact that we learned a lot about coding itself in a short period of time is also something we're proud of.
What we learned
We learned more about the specifics of code and how everything fits together. We also were able to learn how to edit and use a Google Maps API. A couple of our team members who didn't know anything about website development are now able to navigate and edit HTML/CSS pages. We researched a lot about the topic and learned a lot about winter sports in general, specifically a lot about tips/guides.
What's next for WinteRent
We would like to reach out to actual shops and schools to have them added to our website. We would then be able to actually market our website to the public. In addition, we would like to add other winter activities to our website. Adding more winter sporting information and places to go to would be a good idea and specific recommendations for skill levels.
