Divided World:

Raising awareness of job insecurity and increasing empathy & understanding for immigrant workers through narrative based games.

By Ivory Le, Cristian Cortez, and Ken Zhu

Divided World is a narrative based, decision making game where the player follows the journey of a young immigrant worker in the United States as he navigates job loss and financial insecurities. As the player makes decisions, they must weigh their choices and consider what limited resources they have. At the end, they are faced with the outcome of their decisions and given resources

Impact

Through Divided World, users are put into the shoes of an immigrant worker, experiencing firsthand the challenges and difficult decisions they face. This immersive narrative approach can create significant impact in several ways:
Increased Empathy: By directly controlling the protagonist's choices, players develop a deeper understanding and emotional connection to the immigrant worker's struggles. This personal involvement can foster greater empathy towards real-world immigrants facing similar challenges.
Awareness of Complex Issues: The game highlights the intricate web of social, economic, and legal issues surrounding immigration and job insecurity. Players gain insight into the multifaceted nature of these problems, promoting a more nuanced understanding of the topic.
Perspective Shift: The game challenges players to see the world from a different viewpoint, potentially altering preconceived notions about immigrant workers and their experiences.

What's next for Divided World

To enhance Divided World and increase the number of scenarios, we can implement a Java backend. This addition would allow for more dynamic and varied gameplay experiences. By adding a Java backend, we can significantly expand the game's depth and replayability, offering players a more diverse and engaging experience with each playthrough.
