Inspiration

As a lifelong wine enthusiast based in California, I grew frustrated with the disjointed experience of exploring wines—scattered tastings, generic education, and no real community. I wanted to create a space where people could dive deep into wine culture, connect with like-minded lovers, and experience curated wines with purpose. The vision? A one-stop hub that blends virtual and in-person experiences, making wine learning social and accessible, not intimidating.

What it does

Wine Tasting Club delivers a monthly curated wine selection paired with immersive experiences: virtual tastings led by sommeliers, structured wine education, local in-person events/winery tours, and a community space to share tasting notes and ratings. It’s where casual drinkers and budding enthusiasts alike can learn, connect, and savor wine together.

How we built it

We started with user research across the US and EU to map core needs, then designed a responsive frontend with React and Tailwind CSS for seamless navigation. We integrated Google Maps API for local event mapping, Chart.js for visualizing community ratings, and Figma for UI/UX design aligned with Western minimalist aesthetics. Content was crafted with regional wine expertise to resonate with North American and European audiences.

Challenges we ran into

Balancing regional relevance (e.g., EU vs. US wine preferences, timezones for virtual tastings) was tough—we had to ensure event scheduling and wine selections felt tailored to both markets without favoritism. Also, creating an intuitive flavor-tag system that matched common wine terminology across regions required iterative testing with local sommeliers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We built a cohesive experience that feels personal, not generic—from the tasting note editor to the local event map. The virtual tasting lounge captures the warmth of in-person gatherings, and the education hub demystifies wine jargon in a way that’s approachable. Most importantly, it feels authentic to wine culture in the West, not a one-size-fits-all solution.

What we learned

We deepened our understanding of how cultural nuances shape wine consumption—Europeans prioritize terroir and tradition, while North Americans lean into accessibility and social experience. We also learned that simplicity beats complexity: users wanted easy navigation over overloaded features, so we streamlined the interface to focus on connection and discovery.

What's next for this project

We plan to expand regional wine curation (adding more EU-focused selections like Rioja and Tuscany), integrate live virtual tasting streaming, and partner with local wineries in key European and US cities for exclusive tours. We’ll also add personalized wine recommendation tools based on user tasting notes to make the experience even more tailored.
