Inspiration
After renovating my home, I struggled to find a one-stop resource for window coverings—no single guide tied room needs (like bathroom waterproofing or bedroom blackout) to budget and installation. I wanted to create something intuitive for homeowners like me, eliminating the guesswork in choosing blinds, curtains, or shades.
What it does
The WindowTreatment Guide is a web platform that helps users select window coverings by room type (bedroom, kitchen, etc.), functional needs (privacy, light control), style, and budget. It also provides step-by-step measurement/installation guides and curated product recommendations with affiliate links to trusted retailers.
How we built it
We started by mapping room-function priorities (e.g., home office glare reduction) and designing a responsive page structure (homepage, 6 room detail pages, guides). We used HTML/CSS/React for the frontend, Bootstrap for responsiveness, and integrated affiliate APIs to link products. Figma was used for visual mockups, and Netlify for deployment.
Challenges we ran into
Designing filter logic to handle multiple simultaneous criteria (e.g., waterproof + full privacy for bathrooms) was tricky—we had to ensure no-matching-results messages worked seamlessly. Also, optimizing visual diagrams for small mobile screens required iterative responsive design tweaks.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a fully responsive platform that tailors recommendations to each room’s unique needs, with clear, visual measurement/installation guides. The affiliate link integration works reliably (new tab behavior), and the filter system accurately refines product suggestions—no confusing user flows!
What we learned
We mastered balancing functional logic (filter rules) with UX simplicity, and learned how to integrate external APIs while maintaining brand consistency. We also gained insight into Western homeowners’ priorities (e.g., energy efficiency in living rooms, safety in kids’ rooms) for targeted content.
What's next for this project
We plan to add more style categories (bohemian, industrial) and expand product tiers with more retailer partnerships. We’ll also optimize the measurement guide with interactive tools (e.g., a width/height calculator) and add video tutorials for installation steps.
