🚩 Inspiration Every time we hear "support our soldiers", it often ends at slogans. But when we looked closer, we saw something deeper: soldiers face emotional isolation, long hours with no contact, and zero digital tools to feel connected without compromising security. Inspired by real conversations and empathy for those in uniform, we wanted to build something that works without the internet, speaks their language, and supports mental resilience — even in silence.
💡 What it does Wilp is an offline-first mobile app built for soldiers and with soldiers in mind. It offers:
Morale Wall: Uplifting quotes, voice notes, or family photos – viewable even without signal.
Beacon Mode: One-tap status updates like "I'm Safe", "Need Help", or "Mission Reached" sent via Bluetooth to nearby units.
SOS: A one-button emergency alert that activates sound, flashlight, and shows last known location.
Private Logs: A place to write encrypted, personal messages that can be unlocked only by family. All with a glove-friendly, military-grade dark UI.
🛠️ How we built it We used:
React Native with Expo for cross-platform mobile development
Local Storage (AsyncStorage) for offline data handling
Mock Bluetooth (placeholder logic) for Beacon feature simulation
Expo-av for audio/voice playback in Morale Wall
Tailored UI Design with large buttons, high contrast fonts, and military color palette
🧗 Challenges we ran into Ensuring complete offline functionality while still simulating communication between devices
Making UI elements large enough for gloved fingers without losing visual appeal
Limited time and platform restrictions (Bolt AI token limits) during build
Creating emotional impact while maintaining a lightweight app structure
🏆 Accomplishments that we're proud of A fully working offline app tailored for defense use — not just a concept
Designing a useful, usable, and emotional product from scratch
Making tech that doesn't rely on the internet — which is often taken for granted
UI/UX that respects the field realities of soldiers — speed, simplicity, clarity
📚 What we learned How to build for constraint — no internet, limited screen time, max simplicity
Realized the importance of human-centered design especially in defense
Gained hands-on with offline-first architecture and Bluetooth mock simulation
That tech empathy can be more powerful than flashy features
🚀 What’s next for Wilp Add real Bluetooth P2P
Convert into a Progressive Web App version for browser-based deployment
Partner with defense institutions for feedback and pilot testing
Integrate biometric lock for encrypted logs
Create an AI-based mental health assistant that works fully offline
